Job Title: Sustainability Officer / Graduate

Salary: £28,000 – £32,000 per annum.

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Sustainability Officer / Graduate to support and drive our sustainability initiatives across the business. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional to develop hands-on experience in environmental management, compliance, and corporate sustainability within the engineering sector.

You will play a key role in supporting the implementation and continuous improvement of our environmental management systems, with the main focus on achieving and sustaining ISO 14001.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of sustainability strategies and policies
  • Support the ongoing process of achieving ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)
  • Monitor and report on environmental performance, including energy use, waste management, and carbon footprint
  • Conduct internal audits and assist with external audits
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation and industry standards
  • Promote sustainability awareness and best practices across the company
  • Work closely with project teams to integrate sustainable solutions into operations
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records for compliance and reporting purposes

Requirements

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering or a related field (or working towards one)
  • Strong interest in sustainability, environmental management, and compliance
  • Knowledge or understanding of ISO 45001 is advantageous
  • Excellent organisational and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • A proactive and detail-oriented approach
  • Create and execute sustainability policies, action plans and Net Zero strategies.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on energy, water and waste consumption
  • Responsible for ensuring all mechanical and electrical design, procurement and commissioning activities comply with BREEAM standards
  • Responsible for conducting Whole Life Carbon Assessments (WLCA) and embodied carbon modelling of mechanical and electrical systems in compliance with RICS and CIBSE TM65 standards to identify low-carbon design opportunities and achieve Net Zero targets

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Previous internship or work experience in sustainability or compliance
  • Understanding of carbon reporting and environmental impact assessment
  • Knowledge of UK environmental legislation
